Nk'Mip Campground + Desert Site Plan
Client Osoyoos Indian Band
Location Oliver | British Columbia | Canada
The Osoyoos Indian Band actively searches out sustainable business opportunities; when their land in the Osoyoos desert saw rapid increases in tourism, O2 was retained to design a larger, more attractive campground. The area is highly visited in summer months due to warm lake conditions and sunny weather. O2’s plan provides access to the lake, and conserves valuable desert habitat. Products of the work included a series of plan graphics and construction documents.
The Nk’Mip site is also one of the last remaining desert areas in Canada and is an important and biologically diverse area. O2 conducted site planning and analysis for the area, and established a plan for its sustainable development.
The Nk’Mip Desert Site Plan emphasized conservation of fragile areas and development in previously damaged areas. Specific proposed developments included a hotel complex, a campground, a winery, and an interpretive centre. Extensive mapping of the desert was carried out and a trail plan with interpretive structures was also developed.
