Pine Creek Waste Water
Treatment Plant

Client The City of Calgary
Location Calgary | Alberta | Canada

The Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) project was initiated in December 2002 to provide a sustainable and sophisticated approach to Calgary’s growing wastewater treatment needs. Operating at 100 ML per day, Stage one of the project was completed in 2007; Stage two will be completed by 2020; and a full build out in incremental stages will be completed by 2070. The plant, which will operate at 750 - 800 ML per day, will be the largest in the city. The City of Calgary Wastewater Department engaged O2 to carry out a biophysical impact assessment, and to oversee the overall site planning and landscape architectural components of the project, while coordinating with engineering and architectural consultants on the project team.

The project has been certified LEED Silver and features significant sustainable environmental design and planning initiatives, including the establishment of a water research park with experimental streams for wastewater treatment, public education components, green roofs, and native vegetation.
