Emerald Crescent Geodesign

Located in southeast Edmonton, the unique site of the 1,960 ha Decoteau plan area includes numerous natural areas. O2 in collaboration with the City of Edmonton, school boards and area land developers created the vision of the Emerald Crescent in Decoteau. This vision describes a well-connected green network that not only preserves key natural elements in the area but also provides residents easy access to recreational and educational opportunities. 

O2 employed a Geodesign framework in three workshops to establish a clear understanding of measures of success for all parties and get feedback for alternative concepts. The measures of success incorporate ecological, recreational and development considerations and were used to iteratively evaluate against the alternative concepts throughout the project.

With automated analysis of performance metrics and real-time reporting dashboard powered by ArcMap and CityEngine, O2 efficiently updated the concept based on feedback from all stakeholders. The resulting preferred concept provides an opportunity for the City to pilot the implementation of Edmonton’s Breathe Green Network Strategy (also developed by O2) for creating an accessible, connected, and well-functioning open space network throughout the city.
